Recently, Canaan released the second-generation 16nm Avalon series bitcoin miner A10. Now, after receiving the prototype of Avalon A10, EastShore will bring you the evaluation as follows.

External Appearance of AvalonMiner A10

Since the AvalonMiner A10 miner we received this time is not packed with standard mass-production standards, we will omit the unpacking photos and only focus on the miner performance.

The A10 miner adopts the design of parallel dual cooling fans instead of the cylindrical single fan. The power supply is also integrated with the miner. The physical size is 292×190×190mm and the gross weight is 7.95kg. The miner can be placed horizontally or vertically according to the actual racks on the mining farms.

The AvalonMiner A10 adopts a power supply(model HQ2100-W02A) with the maximum efficiency of more than 94%. With IIC software communication, it can adapt to various requirements on power supply on the mining farm (AC input 176V~300V) and adjust the real-time output voltage between 12V and 14.5V based on the working status of the chip. The power supply has switch control, which is connected and fixed with the hashboard by the connectors.

AvalonMiner A10 control board has 2 AUC3 data transmission interfaces and 1 LED indicator. The indicator can be illuminated by the button “CGMiner Status” on the configuration page for the convenience of searching the miners. There are also two interfaces for cooling fans and one interface for power supply to regulate the voltage.

The AvalonMiner A10 adopts two 12038 12V 2.7A PWM fans with the model QFR1212GHE. The air outlet baffle is designed as hexagonal cutout to highlight the Canaan logo and the hashboard can be seen from outside. According to visual observation, the AvalonMiner A10 is equipped with two hashboards.

The accessories of AvalonMiner A10 include 1 miner power cord; 1 Raspberry Pi; 1 AUC3; 1 AUC3 cable, 2 micro USB cables. According to the official distribution policy, 5 or more miners will be gifted with 1 AUC3 (accumulated by 5 times), customers with less than 5 miners need to buy separately. In addition, the Raspberry Pi and power supply also need to be purchased separately.

Dismantling the AvalonMiner A10, we can see that the casing is spliced by different aluminum alloys and fixed by screws based on different positions and functions instead of integrated molding, so the assembling seems a little complicated. Of course, it’s only an engineering prototype, maybe the final model of mass production will adopt improved design.

AvalonMiner A10 is equipped with two hashboard and each one carries 120 AvalonMiner 7nm A3205 chips. Every hashboard is fixed to the cooling fins with 18 screws to enhance the efficiency of heat conduction.

Installation and Configuration of AvalonMiner A10

The installation and configuration of AvalonMiner A10 are almost the same as that of other AvalonMiner series. Please refer to the User’s Manual of AvalonMiner Miners for detailed installation and configuration.

 

Test Data of AvalonMiner A10

The temperature in test environment is about 20℃, nominal voltage is 226V and the environmental noise is 51dB.

The standby power consumption is about 10W and the startup noise is about 53dB.

In stable running, the tested power consumption is 1847W and the summit value is 1850W. The close noise is tested as 85.4dB and the tested noise about 2 meters away is 74dB.

The air inlet temperature is 28.4℃, the casing temperature is 38.2℃ and the air outlet temperature is 50.5℃.

The tested temperature on power supply casing is 30.5℃ and the air outlet temperature is 36.5℃.

After 24 hours of operation, the average hashrate displayed on configuration page is 31.2T.

Summary

  • A10 miner adopts solid materials and AvalonMiner 16nm A3205 chip. It’s very uncommon for the 16nm miner to achieve such a low power consumption ratio.
  • The test result of hashrate is 31.2T, which is slightly higher than the official value of 31T. The power consumption 1850W is also within the official value of 1736W (0% ~ +15%).
  • The design of integrated power supply facilitates the maintenance on mining farms.
  • Unique Raspberry Pi cluster control increases the management efficiency on large-scale mining fields.
  • After 24 hours of testing, the power consumption of hashrate is stable with less fluctuations.
  • Noise and temperature are well controlled and the noise level is within acceptable limits.
  • Accessories such as Raspberry Pi and USB cables need to be purchased separately. For the small amount of miner purchase, the cost is increased. However, for the bulk purchase, the cost of network cable and router as well as wiring will be greatly saved with less financial investments.
